Dueling Pianos for Conventions, Conference Receptions and Corporate Events
A convention day is long. Attendees sit through keynotes, breakouts and vendor halls, and by the time the evening program starts, a lot of them are thinking about their hotel room. The evening event is where a convention either brings people together or loses them. That is why more planners are booking dueling pianos for conference receptions, closing-night parties and corporate events tied to a convention.
Modern Dueling Pianos recently played Asset Living's convention at the Peppermill Resort in Reno. It was a big room full of colleagues from different offices, many of them meeting in person for the first time, and within a few songs the request slips were stacking up and whole tables were singing together. Here is why the format works so well for conventions and what to plan for.
Why dueling pianos work at conventions
Everyone gets a say. Two pianist-singers face each other and the crowd, and the set list comes from audience requests. A convention crowd mixes ages, regions and job titles, and an all-request show gives each of them a way in, whether they want Journey, Garth Brooks, Bruno Mars or a 2000s throwback.
It breaks the ice for you. The players call out tables, departments and regions, dedicate songs and pull the occasional guest up to the piano. People who spent the day in different sessions end up laughing at the same moment, which is exactly what a networking reception is supposed to do.
It works around the program. We can play background-level sets during dinner, then turn it up after the awards or the closing remarks. The extra microphone handles welcomes, sponsor thank-yous and announcements from the same stage, so you do not need a separate setup for the speaking portion.
It keeps the content right for the room. For a corporate audience we keep the show clean and on brand. Tell us how loose you want the late part of the night to get and we will match it.
Convention and conference events that fit
- Opening-night welcome receptions, where attendees arrive tired from travel and need something easy to walk into.
- Closing-night parties and awards dinners, where you want a big finish people talk about on the flight home.
- Sales kickoffs and incentive trips, where top performers get called out and celebrated from the stage.
- Sponsor and vendor hospitality nights, where the goal is to keep clients in the room and talking. Our guide to client appreciation event entertainment has more ideas.
- Association and industry conferences at resort and casino ballrooms in Reno, Tahoe, Sacramento and the Bay Area.
If you are still comparing options, our list of conference evening entertainment ideas walks through other formats and when each one makes sense.
Planning tips for convention planners
Book it into the run of show early. Hotel ballrooms have tight load-in windows between sessions and dinner. Give us your room flip time and we will plan around it.
Put the pianos where people can see them. In a ballroom, set the stage at the end of the room near the bar or the dance floor, not in a corner behind round tables.
Send us the names. Award winners, the CEO, the team that hit its number, the regional manager who always requests the same song. A few names ahead of time turn a good show into one that feels built for your company.
Think about tips. Request tips are part of the fun. Some companies hand out play money or cover the tips, and some donate them to a charity the company supports.
What we bring and what the venue needs
The show is self-contained. We bring two pianist-singers, two piano shells with professional keyboards, a full sound system, stage lighting and the extra microphone. The venue needs a level space about 16 by 12 feet and standard power. Liability insurance is available if your hotel or venue requires it, and we are used to working with in-house AV teams and banquet staff.
Solo piano and piano karaoke for the rest of the convention
Not every part of a convention needs the full two-piano show. For a cocktail reception, a VIP dinner or a hospitality suite, co-founder James Michael Day plays a solo piano and vocal show. He recently played the cocktail reception for the Darryl Turner Corporation's Title Sales Mastery conference at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, and they have already booked him again for 2027. We also offer live piano karaoke, where attendees take the mic and sing with a live piano player instead of a backing track. It is a great after-party option for teams that want to be part of the show.
